In English-speaking countries, it is common for people to start a conversation with somebody they don’t know when they are together in certain situations. For example, at the bus sTOP and it starts to rain, or in a long line waiting to __________ tickets. And emergencies  make people talk -- have you ever been in a lift when it sTOPped and the lights __________?

“Small talk” is special language; it is __________ a question, and often uses a question tag. We say things like: “You’re in my math class, aren’t you?” Or “I wish the bus would come, don’t you?” Small talk helps us pass the time pleasantly and in the dark lift we might talk to the person there with us—then we won’t feel so bad!
