With over 3,500 patents to his name, Dr. NakaMats, aged 87, had no plans to retire---his dream was to live up to 144 and produce at lease 6,000 patents. Sadly, there’s a serious obstacle lying ahead of him---he’s been diagnosed with cancer.

But he doesn’t plan on going down without a fight. He’s been spending his last days doing the one thing he does best---inventing. He has spent the past two years trying to invent a cure for his disease.

It was discovered in 2013, and he was told he only had around two years left. However, he has been fortunate to make it into 2016 and he is searching for all kinds of therapy so people could live longer. He is determined to continue doing so until the end.

He said that he’d doubted the diagnosis and went for several medical opinions before he was convinced. Later, he realized that radiation therapy and surgery were out of the question for a man of his age. So he turned to developing alternative therapies involving special superfoods, teas, and a special style of singing. He’s also tried to design a robot that could cure the disease.

These ideas seem __________, but keep in mind that he has earned his patents since 14. When he puts his mind to something, he seldom gives up. Apart from inventing his own therapy, he’s pursuing four other life goals right now---inventing an alternative to nuclear energy, a new type of public transport, a device that stores information efficiently and makes Big Data more manageable, as well as passing on his skills to the world’s youth.

Surprisingly, he isn’t bitter about the disease which is forcing him to give up his dreams. “ I’m thankful that I was given the chance to invent my own cure and help both myself and others,” he said. “If it were stomach cancer I would have been angry as that would have been easier to treat.”

8. What is Dr. NakaMats devoted to doing nowadays?

  A. Recovering slowly from his deadly cancer.   B. Planning to produce another 2,500 patents.

  C. Passing on his skills to his next generations.  D. Discovering a new treatment for his cancer.

9. What’s the main reason that Dr. NakaMats hasn’t received normal treatment?

  A. He wants to challenge cancer.              B. He is eager to have a patent for it.

  C. He is too old to be cured                  D. He is not brave enough to face it.

10. The underlined word “outlandish” in paragraph 5 can be replaced by “_________”.

  A. unusual        B. foolish        C. considerate      D. attractive

11. What is implied in Dr. NakaMats’ word in the last paragraph?

   A. His cancer is less serious than stomach cancer.

   B. He is actually optimistic about his cancer.

   C. He is bound to invent a cure for his cancer.

   D. He is gradually forced to give up his dreams.

As we all know, zebra crossings are set up with the purpose of reminding drivers that pedestrians may be trying to get across. Unfortunately, they are not very effective.

A 1998 study done by the Department of Traffic Planning and Engineering at Sweden’s Lund University, showed that three out of four drivers went on driving at the same speed or even picked up speed as they were approaching a crossing. What’s worse, only 5% of them sTOPped even when they saw someone trying to get across. Now a mother-daughter team in India has designed a clever way to get drivers to pay more attention—a zebra crossing with a visual illusion.

Artists Jefferson Thomas and Tom Evans were asked to paint the crosswalks by ILtext-indent:21pt;">Sure enough, in the six months that the 3-D crosswalks have been painted across four of the city’s most dangerous highways, there have been no accidents reported!

The artists say that while it may appear that the zebra crossing could cause the drivers to brake suddenly and become a danger to the vehicles behind, such is not the case. Because of the way the human eye works, the illusion is only visible from a distance. As they get closer, the painting looks just like any other common zebra crossing. But since the drivers are driving slower, they are more likely to sTOP.

The creators hope that their smart design will become increasingly common throughout India and perhaps even the world.

12. What evidence suggests that zebra crossing are not effective?

   A. No drivers are willing to speed up.         B. Most drivers tend to ignore them.

   C. Many drivers speed up after them.          D. Most people don’t always use them.

13. What has been the result of the new zebra crossings?

   A. No people have died in the accidents.

   B. Drivers are more likely to brake suddenly.

   C. It’s safe for people to cross the dangerous roads.

   D. There’s no need for drivers to worry about their driving.

14. Why are the new zebra crossings safe for drivers?

   A. Because they warn the drivers to slow down.

   B. Because they can only be sensed from a distance.

   C. Because they remind drivers not to brake suddenly.

   D. Because they are painted in a different way from others.

15. What is the best title for the text?

    A. 3-D Zebra Crossings in India    B. Making India Roads More Beautiful

    C. The Way to Modern Traffic     D. The Advantage of 3-D Zebra Crossing from China
